The Campion School

Aims

The Campion School has three main aims:

  1. to lead young people to faith in Christ and to mature understanding of the Catholic Faith;
  2. to develop in its pupils inquiring minds through the study of a broad range of subjects and through the encouragement of self-discipline and hard work in the pursuit of excellence;
  3. to encourage young people to fully develop themselves intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually through academic study and through participation in extra curricular activities.

The School motto is “Auctore Deo”, which means “the Enterprise is of God”, and is taken from an extract of the booklet written by Campion called “The Brag”. It reminds us that all that we do is with God and for God:

“The expense is reckoned, the enterprise is begun; it is of God, it cannot be withstood. So the faith was planted: so it must be restored.”

Ethos

The Campion School is a Roman Catholic voluntary-aided comprehensive school. It was originally established by the Society of Jesus in 1962, but handed on to the Diocese of Brentwood in 1965. Since then it has been run by a lay headteacher and staff, although there is currently a Franciscan Priest (part-time) on the teaching staff. His work is complimented and supported by a number of parish priests acting as chaplains under the co-ordination of Fr Sean Sheils of Corpus Christi, Collier Row.

The school admits only boys in the main school (11-16) but has admitted a number of girls to the Sixth Form each year for some time, and this number has grown in recent years. The governors have since 1996 been able to expand the number of boys admitted each year from 124 to 150, and as a consequence the school is now approximately 1000 strong. There are no plans at present to expand beyond this general size.

The school ethos is Christian. It is a Christian community and worships God daily and practises the faith through its communal work. Religious assemblies are held each week and prayers are offered daily. Mass is celebrated for the whole school at key points in the liturgical and academic calendar. Year and Tutor Group masses are celebrated throughout the year by the chaplains. The school undertakes considerable community service and charitable work, most notably through its links: with the Society of St Vincent de Paul, where it works with a local school and home for the disabled; with the Jesuit and Kenya Missions, which have been regularly visited and supported by Campion Sixth-formers; with Crisis at Christmas and other charities such as CAFOD and the Brentwood Catholic Children’s Society; and with many local schools, hospitals and charities.
